My name is Petra Burdine and I am the owner of A Better Way of Care.
I am originally from Germany, came to Oklahoma in 1984 and have not had much time to look back since then.
At the age of 17, while working an internship in a county hospital, an old lady died in my arms. This lady mistook me for her daughter and since I did not know what else to do. I played along and gave her the last few minutes of happiness. She passed on with the most beautiful smile on her face.
This incidence still shapes my thinking and how I feel about life and death. It is personally important to me to add to the quality of life and happiness of anyone I come in contact with. I just want to make life a little better in my corner of the world.
Since I am now mainly working with Seniors and approaching that age rapidly myself there have been a few occasions to review my own life.
Two poems define my live, the first one is Footprints In The Sand-since God had to carry me through much of the first half of my life and teach me the things I needed to know.
The second poem defining my life since I turned 49 ( just a few "months" back) is: A Bicycle Ride With God. Not as well known as the Footprints, but ultimately more exciting.
God took over the handlebars of my bicycle one beautiful Spring day while I was working as a Social Worker for a hospice company, visiting some patients way out in the boondocks.
As so often in Oklahoma, we were under a tornado watch. Out in the country, where sirens are not always audible, the Sheriff often will drive to more isolated housing to distribute tornado warnings. He drove by, yelled for us to take cover and moved on. The next few minutes our nurse and I were busy getting out patient out of bed and putting her with plenty of pillows in the closet and me right beside her to keep her company. The next thing we heard was a freight train in the distance and our nurse screaming. On the insistence of the patient who wanted to see what was going on, we left the closet and went out to the porch.
The tornado was about a quarter of a mile away, heading straight for the little frame house we were in. I knew that our life's were in God's hand. A strange sense of peace came over me and when our patient wanted me to help her all the way out on the porch, it was ok.
Once fully out on the porch, our patient set up very straight in her wheelchair, glared at the tornado that, at that time, was only about 100 yards away, and said:" In the name of God, I command you to go away and do no more harm."
About 75 yards away from the house, the tornado stopped, turned right and left across a field, not even touching a tree in its path. We all watched it leave for the next 10 or 15 minutes.
Life for me has never been the same since then because on this day I learned to trust God and follow His direction.
Less then a year after this life changing day, Hospice regulations changed and I could no longer work in Social Work since my degree is in Behavioral Sciences. I was sad but knew at that time already that my heart belongs to seniors and their care. I found a position with a Senior Care Agency where I learned a lot about business, never even imagining that one day I would open up my own business.
A Few years later I woke up one morning with the though in my mind that if I had to pick a name for a senior care business it would be: A Better Way of Care because I could deliver better care if I were the owner. Right! I quickly shook off the thought to get ready for another day at work and forgot all about it. A few moths later, the agency I worked for became unstable and the working conditions became deplorable. I could no longer feel pride in where I worked and came to the conclusion that I needed to find another job.
As I was updating resumes, a still, small voice reminded me of the name I had dreamed up a few months earlier. Of course, I disregarded it and ignored it. I did not have the finances to open up a business. I did not know what all it takes to start a business. But the idea grew stronger. It would not hurt to find out what it takes to start a business. Almost everything I needed to know was at my fingertips on the computer.
Two weeks later I had all my necessary permits, opened my doors, followed God and my heart and took a leap of faith.
Since then, I feel blessed and grateful every day and look forward to each new day and the paths and scenes God is showing me.
